At 27 years old He enrolled in the National Theatre School of Denmark. He graduated in 1994. He was also a part of The Killing, a drama series which was broadcast across the world. He later appeared in Borgen III and Those Who Kill the two internationally highly acclaimed Danish dramas. He also played a major role in the BBC drama Sherlock in which he played blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. He played the role of Russia's president on the American television show House of Cards. He received an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his performance in Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This series was broadcast in the UK as Ride Upon the Storm in 2019. He said that his brother and he began learning English through studying and listening to the Monty Python songs.
